“The scholarship of teaching is systematic reflection on teaching and learning made public.” Illinois State University has been involved in national programs to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) since at least 1998. This includes work in the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Campus Program and with the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE). ISU was selected by AAHE and Carnegie as one of 12 national SoTL Cluster Leaders and worked with 9 other institutions around the nation to organize to support SoTL. After that three year phase, ISU was a member institution, with 5 other schools, in the CASTL Campus Leadership phase in a theme group working on sustaining student voices in SoTL. ISU also has worked to promote learner autonomy as part of this last phase of formal CASTL work. Finally, in the last phase of CASTL (2010-2011) institutions were to connect SoTL work to key institutional initiatives. At ISU, we supported, conducted, and shared SoTL about civic engagement (including service learning) and learner autonomy. The links below offer information, resources, and reports on all this work.
