The Office of the Cross Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is the primary unit at Illinois State University to provide resources for faculty doing SoTL work.
The scholarship of teaching and learning involves the systematic study of teaching and/or learning of our students and the public sharing and review of such work through presentations, videos, web representations, performances, or publications. Public products of SoTL work may be local, regional, national, or international. SoTL shares established criteria of scholarship in general, such as that it is made public, can be reviewed critically by members of the appropriate community, and can be built upon by others to advance the field.
SoTL as defined at ISU fits within the Illinois State University definitions of scholarship and of research, is a form of or overlaps with with the scholarship of discovery and/or integration and, thus, should be evaluated and rewarded in the ASPT process under scholarship/creative activity.
SoTL scholarly work at ISU includes Gauisus, a collection of papers that deal with the teaching and learning of students at ISU; publications by ISU faculty, staff, and students; the SoTL video documentary Civic Engagement at ISU: Case Studies and Student Reflection; and selected other examples of SoTL Work.
You can find more information about publishing scholarly work on the Publication Outlets page.
